restaurant.compound discounts

My dad uses restaurant.com to buy gift certificates at restaurants.  As they boast on their website:

Pretty good deal, right?  Even better though, a quick google search for restaurant.com coupons yields this:

So if you use both the coupons, what percent discount do you get?

  1. Methinks you end up with a net 92% discount…the original deal is a 60% discount on a $25 “value” with a price of $10 for a $15 savings…an additional 80% discount on the $10 for an $8 additional savings leaves one paying $2 for the $25 “value” for a net savings of $23 or 92% off the coupon’s value…sure hope I’m right or my future students are in for some interesting math! And me some egg on my face…

    I’m paying $2 for a $25 certificate. 2 out of 25 is 8%. I’m paying 8%, so I must be saving 92%. What a deal! :D

I did kind of leave out some facts from the discount though…

The $25 discount requires that you spend at least $35, not including tax and tip. If you factor in that information (and pay tax with a reasonable tip), what’s the discount?
